One of the department’s core mandates is to provide universal access to essential healthcare services, particularly for the previously disadvantaged and marginalized communities in South Africa. This includes the development and maintenance of a network of public hospitals, clinics, and community health centers that cater to the diverse healthcare needs of the population.

Beyond direct service delivery, the Department of Health also plays a pivotal role in public health education, disease prevention, and health promotion initiatives. It collaborates with other government agencies, non-profit organizations, and international partners to address pressing public health challenges, such as the HIV/AIDS epidemic, tuberculosis, malaria, and the rising burden of non-communicable diseases.

The Department of Health is led by the National Minister of Health, who is appointed by the President of South Africa. It operates through various divisions and units, each focusing on specialized areas such as primary healthcare, hospital services, pharmaceutical services, and health information management.
