Introduction: Why This Programme Matters in 2026
South Africa’s welding and fabrication sector continues to face a shortage of qualified artisans. This gap creates real opportunities for young people who want practical skills, job security and the possibility of starting their own businesses. The Mpumalanga Stainless Initiative (MSI) Training Skills 2026 Learning Programme is designed specifically to address that shortage.
Unlike ordinary welding courses, this programme combines accredited technical training, real workshop experience, mentorship, and full business incubation. It prepares learners for employment in the steel industry and equips them to become independent entrepreneurs.
What Exactly Does This Programme Offer?
The MSI programme is built around a full 12-month learning journey that blends technical training with business development. Participants receive:
1. Accredited Coded Welding and Fabrication Training
Over six months, learners are exposed to:
- Coded welding processes
- Cutting, bending and joining steel
- Fabrication techniques used in industry
- Workshop safety standards
- Hands-on practical exposure in a real industrial environment
Because the training is SETA-accredited, it is recognised across the country, giving learners mobility in the job market.
2. Monthly Stipend
Participants receive financial support throughout the programme to help them remain committed for the full duration.
3. Business Training and Mentorship
A unique part of this programme is its focus on entrepreneurship. Participants receive:
- Training on starting and managing a welding or fabrication business
- Ongoing mentorship
- Guidance on pricing, costing, marketing and growth strategies
- Access to supplier networks and potential clients
This structure prepares learners not only to find work but to create work.

5. Access to Industrial Facilities
Participants gain access to:

This access significantly reduces startup costs for new welding businesses.
