The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), through the JSE Empowerment Fund (JEF), is inviting eligible students to apply for the 2026 bursary programme. This initiative is designed to support young South Africans from previously disadvantaged backgrounds who are pursuing studies in high-demand fields.

Fields of Study Covered

The JSE bursary is available for undergraduate and Honours-level postgraduate studies in the following areas:

  • Computer Science
  • Mathematics
  • Actuarial Science
  • Information Technology
  • Informatics
  • Data Analytics
  • Economics
  • Finance
  • Accounting

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for this bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a South African citizen.
  • Must have completed Matric.
  • Must be studying full-time towards a degree in one of the listed fields.
  • Must be entering 2nd year, 3rd year, or Honours in 2026.
  • Must be registered at one of these South African universities:
    • University of Pretoria (UP)
    • University of Johannesburg (UJ)
    • University of the Witwatersrand (Wits)
    • University of Cape Town (UCT)
    • University of Limpopo (UL)
    • University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN)
    • University of the Free State (UFS)
    • University of Fort Hare (UFH)
    • Nelson Mandela University (NMU)
    • North-West University (NWU)
  • Must have achieved a minimum overall average of 70%.
  • Household income must not exceed R650 000 per year.
  • Must be from a previously disadvantaged background.

What the JSE Bursary Covers

The bursary provides financial support towards:

  • Tuition fees
  • Study-related expenses

This allows recipients to focus on their academic goals without the burden of financial stress.

Required Supporting Documents

When applying, ensure you submit the following (certified copies where necessary):

  • South African ID document
  • Full academic record/transcripts (on official university letterhead)
  • Proof of university registration (on official university letterhead)
  • Proof of household income (parents’/guardians’ latest payslips, affidavit if unemployed, or proof of grant/pension if applicable)
  • Proof of residence
  • Signed affidavit confirming the accuracy of all submitted information
