The City of Johannesburg (CoJ), through its Department of Environmental Infrastructure Service, is inviting suitably qualified and unemployed graduates to apply for the Internship Opportunities for 2025 / 2026. These internships are designed to help young professionals gain essential work experience and practical exposure in various departments within the municipality.

The programme will run for a period not exceeding eighteen (18) months, giving interns the opportunity to develop their skills, grow professionally, and contribute meaningfully to the city’s ongoing development initiatives.


Internship Overview

Selected interns will be required to sign both an internship agreement and an employment contract, ensuring full participation in all educational and workplace assignments in line with the City’s established policies and procedures.

  • Stipend: R10 109.86 per month (Basic Salary, no additional benefits)
  • Duration: 18-month contract

These internships aim to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world experience, preparing young South Africans for sustainable careers in their chosen fields.

Internship: Finance

Requirements:

  • National Diploma or Degree in AccountingManagement AccountingFinance, or an equivalent qualification.

Duties:

  • Apply and coordinate accounting procedures within the Environmental Infrastructure and Service Department.
  • Assist in the procurement of goods and services, processing of accounting entries, and maintaining accurate financial records.
  • Perform transactional tasks related to creditors’ and debtors’ accounts and general ledger maintenance.
  • Liaise with the GSSCM and internal stakeholders to ensure compliance with the CoJ Supply Chain Management Policy.
  • Handle stock management tasks including ordering, receiving, and issuing internal stock items.
  • Support asset movement tracking and verification processes.

Internship: Programme for Administration Officer

Requirements:

  • National Diploma or Degree in Office AdministrationPublic AdministrationBusiness Administration, or a related qualification.

Duties:

  • Provide day-to-day administrative assistance including filing, scheduling, correspondence, and report preparation.
  • Consolidate and submit mandatory documentation such as Learning Plans and Declarations of Interest.
  • Assist with the coordination of meetings, capturing accurate employee data, and maintaining compliance records related to Employment Equity and Health & Safety.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Excellent computer literacy (Microsoft Word and Excel)
  • Effective communication and organizational skills
  • Understanding of administration functions and HR training processes

Internship: Water Management and Biodiversity

Requirements:

  • A Degree in Town and Regional PlanningEnvironmental ScienceEnvironmental ManagementGeoscience, or Geohydrology.

Duties:

  • Provide administrative and technical support to the Water Management and Biodiversity Directorate.
  • Assist various sub-directorates with tasks related to Water Service RegulationPolicy DevelopmentCatchment ManagementWater Quality, and Open Space Planning.
  • Coordinate the submission of borehole application documents and development applications.
  • Support monitoring programmes and assist with policy-related activities and documentation.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Word and Excel)
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills
  • Knowledge of the National Water ActWater Services Act, and environmental management principles

Internship: Energy

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) Degree in EngineeringConstruction Project Management, or Energy Studies.

Duties:

  • Support the development of energy policies, strategies, and plans to ensure city compliance with sustainability standards.
  • Provide assistance during policy planning and development at national, provincial, and local government levels.
  • Participate in project managementplanning, and stakeholder coordination processes.
  • Assist with the implementation of energy-related policies and frameworks, including the Energy Service Delivery Framework.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Basic knowledge of climate changeclimate financing, and project development
  • Understanding of the energy sector and sustainability principles
