About the Bursary Provider – SIOC-CDT
The Sishen Iron Ore Company-Community Development Trust (SIOC-CDT) was founded in 2006 with a clear mission: to uplift and invest in the communities where SIOC (Pty) Ltd operates. This initiative is driven by Kumba Iron Ore (KIO) (Pty) Ltd, the parent company of SIOC.
Operating in several municipalities across the Northern Cape and in one area of Limpopo, the trust plays a key role in promoting education, development, and empowerment. Over the years, SIOC-CDT has awarded hundreds of bursaries to underprivileged students, ensuring access to higher education across South Africa.
About the SIOC-CDT Bursary Programme – Fields Covered
SIOC-CDT invites students from its beneficiary communities to apply for its 2026 bursary programme.
Bursaries are open for all fields of study, but preference will be given to students in the following areas:
- Agriculture (Veterinarian, Livestock Product Analyst, Environmental Officer, Agricultural Economist, Agricultural Engineer, Food Technologists, Food Technicians)
- Business Management & Economics (Accounting, Auditing and Tax, Economics, Actuarial Science, Statistics and Mathematics, Project Management)
- Education (BEd. FET Mathematics, Physical Science, Natural Sciences, Economic & Management Sciences, Foundation Phase, Languages, Special Needs)
- Engineering & Science (Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Architecture, Geology, Electrical Engineering, Town Planning, Environmental Health)
- Health & Clinical Sciences (MBChB, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing, Advanced EMS, Chemical, Biological and Medical Lab Sciences, Biochemistry)
- Information Technology (Computer Sciences, Software Development, Data Science/Analytics, Web Design and Development, Communication Technology)
- Law (LLB)
- Tourism (Hospitality Management, Ecotourism Management, Arts and Culture Heritage)
Note: Students pursuing other fields of study are welcome to apply, but those in the above areas will receive preference.
What the Bursary Covers
The SIOC-CDT bursary provides comprehensive financial support, including:
- Registration and tuition fees
- Accommodation
- Prescribed study material
- Laptop
- Monthly stipend
In addition, students with disabilities will also receive assistive devices to support their academic journey.
Selection Process
- Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview.
- If you do not receive any feedback, please consider your application unsuccessful.
Eligibility Requirements for the SIOC-CDT Bursary
To be considered, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be 35 years old or younger at the closing date
- Must reside in or originate from SIOC-CDT beneficiary communities:
- Gamagara Local Municipality (Northern Cape)
- Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality (Northern Cape)
- Tsantsabane Local Municipality (Northern Cape)
- Joe Morolong Local Municipality (Northern Cape)
- Thabazimbi Local Municipality (Limpopo)
- Must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric
- Must be studying or planning to study full-time or part-time at a recognised South African institution in 2026
- Must be pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in one of the listed fields (other fields may also be considered)
- Must have achieved a minimum overall average of 65% in your most recent academic results
- Must be provisionally accepted or fully accepted at a recognised public institution (University, University of Technology, TVET, or FET College)
- Must come from a household with an income of less than R600 000 per year (before deductions)
- Students with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply

Required Supporting Documents
The following documents must be submitted (certified copies not older than 3 months):
- South African ID (certified)
- Matric mid-year/ prelim results if currently in Matric (certified)
- Matric certificate if completed (certified)
- Most recent tertiary results/ transcripts if currently studying (certified)
- Proof of acceptance/ provisional acceptance from a public tertiary institution
- Parents’ or guardians’ proof of income (latest payslips or affidavit if unemployed)
- Parents’ or guardians’ last 3 months bank statements
- Proof of residence (utility bill, rates account, landlord letter, or affidavit from councillor)
- Medical certificate (if applying with a disability)
Closing Date
The closing date for the SIOC-CDT Bursary is 25 November 2025 at 12:00 midday.
Late applications will not be accepted, so apply well before the deadline.
